Wildlife Ponds

Consult - Design - Create

We have created and consulted on many types of wildlife ponds.

Each site is surveyed for its potential merit for wildlife and created according to soil type, aspect and aesthetic appeal

Our design and horticultural expertise allow us to create stylised ponds that support rich and varied wildlife ecosystems

Planting at The Heart

Construction methods are important for wildlife ponds. It isn’t as simple as digging a hole and filling it with water……although that will attract wildlife!

The photographed pond was created on a warm, dry, flat site…..in a walled garden. We consulted after it was constructed and designed the surrounding planting accordingly. As the soil drained very well, typical marginal plants were minimally used. The builders didn’t created stages or ‘beaches’ so we added ramps and further shelter plus rainwater (from a borehole) irrigation.

Butterflies and bees flocked to the surrounding plants and tiny insect populations flourished. In the first year ducklings were spotted along with frog spawn and newts - who naturally compete for habitat.

Ideally, ponds will be formed in late summer and autumn - left to fill up with rainwater over the winter. We like to plant in early summer and let the wildlife come without interference.
